Just a quick note today, as I need to get my mom’s grocery order placed before the deadline for today’s delivery! She lives in FL, and I am in Ohio, and thankfully her area is serviced by InstaCart. At 87, she still lives on her own, but we have tried to keep out of the stores as much as possible since COVID, so the delivery services have been a wonderful resource. But between getting the orders by phone from mom, ordering everything online and then being available for the shopper to approve changes etc – it takes most of the day to get her shopping done! And while I will be eternally grateful for these wonderful people –

Mini-Tutorial:
How to point your website domain to
your new host!

I’ve had several emails about this in the last few days as a recent course made this sound like a very difficult and time-consuming process – and best left to your host’s support team. In reality – this is something that is EASY to do and most hosts will NOT handle it for you!

All you are doing is asking your registrar – the company where you originally purchased your domain name – to point their NAME SERVERS to your new host – literally, your website’s new address! It’s easy and only takes a couple of minutes.

Step 1: Find your DNS details

Find your new web host’s DNS (domain name server) settings – You will usually find them in your welcome email from your new host and they will usually look something like this: ns1.example.com & ns2.example.com. (Yes, that ns stands for ‘name server’)

Step 2: Add your DNS details to your Registrar

Log into your registrar account and find the section for custom name servers. Your registrar is the company where you originally purchased your domain name -it may NOT be the same company that you host with (it’s actually better if it is not – more on that in the future)
Follow your registrar’s instructions for updating/changing your DNS Settings or Domain Name Server Setup. In most cases, all you do is copy and paste the name server details from your host’s welcome email to the DNS form on the registrar’s site, and click save. Done.

Step 3: Wait for the changes to take place

Now we wait for the changes to take place – this is called ‘propagation’ as the data centers around the globe update your website’s new address. Although it can take up to 72 hours for the changes to take effect, these days it rarely takes more than an hour or so!

That’s all there is to it! It’s literally a 5-minute process to point your domain to your new web host!
