Facebook's Community Standards....Excuse Me??

Well, my goodness! What a fun week this has been, and it's ONLY TUESDAY!!!

The story begins:
Sometime Sunday afternoon, I received a text message, supposedly from Facebook, that said I needed to confirm my ID and change my Facebook password due to 'suspicious activity' on the account. It looked like a classic phishing attempt to get my login details, so I made sure to go to my desktop computer and login directly to Facebook, not through the text message link.

So, upon attempting to login, sure enough I get a message to change my password to make sure my account is secure. All goes fine, and I give the account a quick look, not seeing anything out of the ordinary. Then, suddenly, a window pops up and says that I have been blocked from the account and sends me to a link where I have to upload my photo ID. The next message says that due to COVID-19, it may take longer than normal for them to review my ID and my account.

NOPE!!! They apparently reviewed it right away because I checked a couple of hours later and this is the message that I get upon ATTEMPTING to login:

Your Account Has Been Disabled
You can't use Facebook because your account, or activity on it, didn't follow our Community Standards. We have already reviewed this decision and it can't be reversed. To learn more about the reasons we disable accounts visit the Community Standards.

I spent the next hour scouring through message boards and forums, and Facebook itself, of course. And sure enough - there is NO WAY TO APPEAL!! I have no idea what happened, or what they found since apparently the account was hacked. The idea of my violating any "Community Standard" is a joke to anyone that knows me.

The account is gone. Wiped clean. Bye-bye. Nothing left.
For me, it's more of an insult and injustice than a business disaster, but if I depended on Facebook for my livelihood? My business would have been devastated, and possibly wiped out altogether. And the truth is, I know way too many people that this has happened to, which is why I always have my own sites and hosting, and backups.

The bottom line is that if you are building your business on ANYTHING other than a domain that you own and control, you need to make sure it's not your only asset. Whether it is Shopify, eBay, Etsy, or Amazon - if you can't control it, it is not an asset. Yes, people do lose domains through carelessness or true hijacking - but it's not as common as being shut down by eBay or Etsy - or Facebook!!

But the fun does not end there!! If you read Cindy Bidar's newsletter yesterday - her house was flooded and today ours is, and the water is still rising! I am working on my iPad right now because we had to unplug the computers as there is water coming in above the office window! AND...you could go bass fishing in my basement today!

We had record-breaking rains overnight and we are expecting another 2-2.5 inches overnight, so it may be a couple of days before we are fully back operational.
|
Providing, of course, that we don't get locusts next....yeah, I am repeating myself because that is the way we felt a few weeks ago when the tornadoes were in the area!
|
So my usual Tuesday Tutorial is going to be the THURSDAY TUTORIAL this week because all of my saved resources are on my desktop, not this lil' iPad. It also means that bonus delivery for Huw's Fairies will be a couple of days late (sorry!), and the new digital planners will be out on Monday. I was working on a gorgeous coral design last night that is going to be on my own iPad when it is done ;-), so I promise the wait will be worth it. I am building out a full foundation for the digital planner library so we can roll out new designs easily and frequently!! We are building them the right way, with Master Slides, but also the easy way, so pretty much anyone can use them and sell them.
