Ugh. Not a great week with the sites being offline for days and still not totally functional! I am exhausted and it is only WEDNESDAY!!! HUMP DAY?? More like MOUNTAIN DAY.....but Bob continues to improve so all is not bad ;-)
|
Building an online business is not rocket science. In truth, with time and patience and a little help from your friends (points if you know the group!!), and some $$$ spent on tools and training, almost anyone can earn a living online.
|
The web is a wonderfully open and pretty much level playing field where no one needs to know who you are, your ethnicity, your religion or your lifestyle choices. You can be as transparent or as creative about your identity as you wish.
|
But no matter how much training we get, or how successful we are as either product creators or affiliate marketers - our business - our livelihood! - is always ultimately in someone else's hands because the services that are the lifeblood of our businesses are services that are owned, managed and controlled by others.
|
We are always told to build a list, that it is our greatest asset yet we have to entrust that list to external email services, which can shut us off any time they want.
As a content or product creator, we need to have someplace to SELL our products - and that means using a third-party platform such as Etsy, Ecwid or Shopify, and we can lose our account at their discretion at any time.
|
And having your own website is no guarantee that you are safe, as many in our space learned over the last few days. Many of us were hit by a failed hard drive at a popular web host, and whether through human error or mechanical failure, there were many websites and databases that were lost and unrecoverable.
In the blink of an eye, businesses were lost.
I was fortunate - my sites are more or less intact - although it looks like several days of updates to the various group pages were lost, and about 3 days of emails - so if you emailed me and have not heard back - please re-send! There are a lot of dead links to fix, but all in all, it could have been a lot worse. I am thankful that is all that happened.
But others were not so lucky, and we will be feeling the repercussions of this outage for quite some time.

The bottom line is this: even if your hosting company tells you that they back up your website nightly - you should be backing up your site at least weekly. It's a PITA for sure but consider it your insurance policy.
AND - always export your mailing list from your email service provider weekly, AND after every event. AND...if you use a member management system like aMember - be sure to export your data from there weekly too.

Remember - this is your business! If you had a brick-and-mortar business, you would have insurance to protect against a fire or a break-in - this is NO DIFFERENT!!
