One of the (not-so) fun parts of being a solo/homepreneur is the stuff that no one ever tells you about when they sell you that expensive "Laptop Lifestyle" course: that you are a one-man/woman operation 99.99% of the time - even if you have a VA or other help, because the bottom line is that if you work from home - any support staff you might need is probably NOT in the office next door or just down the hall.

Thursday night, I went to sleep chuckling to myself over the weatherman's warning to leave home a little early Friday because the commute might be nasty due to inclement weather....chuckling because other than the occasional cluster of kitties that I have to get through, my commute is down the stairs, turn left and hit the coffee pot ;-)
|
Little did I know that the tech gremlins had it in for me Friday am when I hit my desk...and discovered that basically....nothing was working like it should...trackpad cursor was laggy and flying all over, Photoshop kept crashing, email was not downloading - you get the picture....
|
So I responded appropriately and immediately: I freaked out.
|
It took almost 3 hours but I went through all of my standard checklists and protocols, and ultimately wound up updating the core OS to the newest version - MUCH sooner than I normally would but 30 minutes before the scheduled LIVE workshop...the update was finally done and working like a charm....and the Workshop went off as planned.
|
The moral of the story is this:
I have worked from home since long before it was 'cool', and one of the best pieces of advice I ever received was to learn everything possible about every aspect of running my business. Yes, you can outsource things if you want - but never let yourself become dependent on others to keep your business running.

You can have your website designed by someone else - but make sure you know how to make quick changes or repairs if something goes wrong in the middle of a launch and your web person is on vacay in the Bahamas...you might have a great product creator that keeps your pipeline full - but what will happen if that person decides to go
|
Always know enough about the 'inner workings' to be able
to fix/pivot as needed, when needed.
The bottom line is that no one will ever care about your business as much as you do, so don't give control to anyone else...ever.
Outsource the work - not your business ;-)
