As predicted, the well-intentioned @everyone hashtag over on FaceBook has turned into an absolute brawl in some groups. Interestingly, there are a lot of people are complaining about the group ADMIN using it to notify the group members of an upcoming LIVE EVENT ON FACEBOOK.
|
One person even said that she did not like it because it destroyed the illusion that the IM was being sent JUST to her by the group admin.
|
Excuse me? You are a member of a marketing group and you do not want any marketing messages sent to you?
|
Kinda like going to the beach and getting ticked off over sand in your beer.
Get over it cuz it IS going to happen.
|
First of all, an admin has the right to communicate with its members. That's kinda why we create and run groups.
|
Secondly, as a member - there is a reason why you joined the group in the first place - and if the admin doesn't have an easy way to notify you of updates and events that you might actually want to SEE...then you probably are not going to get the full benefit of the group experience.
|
Unfortunately, there will be abuses but I think smart admins will realize that this is a great tool that needs to be used sparingly. Like once a week or maybe even once a month?
|
In the meantime, though, it's interesting to see how many people understand the importance of this new tool - and those that consider it a nuisance.
Yes, it IS a nuisance if you are getting tagged 2,4037,000 times a day - but do you really need to belong to that many groups?
If you DO consider an alert from the admin of the group to be an annoyance rather than a helpful reach-out - consider why you joined that group in the first place and whether or not it is still a useful resource to you.

Good chance that if the message annoyed you - it's probably time to let someone else have your spot ;-)
